ADMIN: Regular Season Over

Alright, folks, the tallies are in...

Good sportmanship awards to Glen and Travis, who were the only ones who didn't make the playoffs who posted a story this week. Cudos to you two!

Now, here's how we proceed:

Myself and Dan get the week off since we got the #1 seeds.

In Red Division:
JONATHAN vs. ANDREW

In White Division:
AARON vs. MITCHELL

Let's open voting up for anyone who's not in the playoffs. For those of us in the playoffs, we can vote on games not in our division like usual.
Nevertheless, please keep voting everybody!

It's the final countdown.

ADMIN: New Opportunity

Everybody!

I have friends in interesting places...

Today we were offered a fascinating future. The gents over at latest-ufos.com are looking for some good short stories to help boost their website and traffic. THEREFORE:

They'd like to start their own league. Here's how it would work:

Every week they'd post a classic historical UFO occurrence, and provide information about that event. Then, the players in the league would write fictional stories (this time with a MINIMUM of 500 words, ironic, no?) with that historical event as the setting.

The league would last 6 weeks plus playoffs -- and first place gets $50 gift certificate to Amazon.

Sound worth it? Send me an email (dantestack@hotmail.com) if you're interested.

ADMIN: Week 6 Summary

Gentlemen,

Week Six introduced a new concept to Storyleague; rivalry. Mitchell (currently 2nd place, White Div) appeared to have egged on Jonathan (tied for 2nd, Red Div). Both players looking to make it to the playoffs sets up for a potential literary bean ball. Will Jonathan rush the mound, or will he just take a base? The world waits.

In other news, with one week to go in the regularly scheduled season, the third spot in each division is still in play. Will there be an upset? Also, congrats to the comeback story of the year, Andrew has gone from 0-2, to a formidable 4-2, with one win away from assuring himself a playoff seat.

Alright boys, duke 'em out.

ADMIN: THE DAY THE POOP DIED

For me, the battle of the week was between Jonathan's vociferous poop chronicles Andrew's Kaufmanesque new media exploit. Despite Andrew trying to vote against himself, he picks up the win.

This brings up an interesting dilemma. With two weeks left in the regular season, there looks to be a good chance that there will be a tie for Third Place. The top three players from each league move on to the playoffs, so how should we decide how to break a tie for record?

Ideas?

Admin: Old Hickory gets the win

After Old Hickory talked with me, and since a couple of you voted for him, and his opponent didn't post at all, he gets the win for week 4.

Admin: Dan and Jonathan Week 4 tie

Because both of your stories were awesome, and because of the dirth of posts in your division for week 4, I'm giving you both wins.

Admin: The State of Our Union

Gentleman,

When Constantine became emperor, Rome had lost its way. The nation of Rome had geographically grown so expansive, and become so inclusive, that the meaning of Rome was beginning to fall into shadow. In the beginning, Rome was made united by its idea. It was the first place in the world where man was considered on what he did. It was, to the best of my understanding, more or less run as a meritocracy. Once the Caesars came to power and the borders expanded, that idea began to break. People considered themselves, Franks or Gauls or Vandals or North Africans or Armenians first, and Roman citizens second. That's perhaps why Constantine looked to religion, namely Christianity, to unite peoples of many tribes and nations under one banner.

What we have here is a failure to communicate.

We are well into this season, so I don't consider stopping now. I'll play this thing out no matter how many men drop. That being said, I'm dwelling on how to improve this thing and make it bear more fruit in a second season.

I enjoy this very much. I hope you do too.

But the Rules must be followed or we have chaos. If you have a beef with a regulation, than make it known. If you want an exemption, make it known... But to simply break the regulations is an act of treason! Yes. It has been said.

Old Hickory, who are you? I can't give you credit, you're late and I don't know who you are!

David, 500 words. It's a mandate, not an option.

THE UNION, IT MUST BE PRESERVED!

All that being said, some of my favorite stories of the season were posted in Week 4. Right on.
Remember, The top 3 rankings players from each division make it to the playoffs. We have three more weeks of regulation... play it hard!

ALSO -- I thought it would be fun to have during the playoffs, a vote for best story of the season. I'll talk more about this next week, but let me know if you have thoughts about that idea.

Week 3 Summary

So with Dante & his wife busy with the move back to Europe, I've been asked to tally the votes and make some rulings on the Week 3 competition.

If you have any disagreements about my decisions please take it up with the commissioner (Dante).

Red Division:

Andrew wins 3-1 over Nathan but he did not vote on any other matches, so he also adds a loss to his record.

Dan wins 4-1 over Travis

Elijah vs. Alex draws a loss for both as Elijah posted late and Alex was a no show. But great effort to Elijah for still getting something out and also voting on all the matches.

Noah wins 3-0 over Jonathan's no show. *** For the record, Noah did not vote on all 4 matches, which technically adds a loss but I will not enforce this rule at this time. If you disagree, inquire with the commissioner.

Remember to vote on ALL 4 matches from the opposite division, regardless if even one of the players is a no show. It is important to vote on all matches because someone could lose a match simply because not everyone voted.

White Division:

Aaron wins 4-0 over Christian's no show. *** Aaron also did not vote on all 4 matches but no enforcement of the rule at this time.

Charlie wins 3-1 over William.   *** Charlie also did not vote on all 4 matches but no enforcement of the rule at this time.

WARNING!!! William was way over the allotted 500 words but since he lost, it was not enforced. Beware of the commissioner enforcing this in the future. The commissioner will not word count like a hawk but if you’re obviously way over, it will be enforced. If another competitor wants to contest a loss because they believe their opponent was over 500 words, please contact the commissioner.

Dante wins 3-2 over Glen.   *** Dante also did not vote on all 4 matches but no enforcement of the rule at this time.

Mitchell wins 2-0 over David's no show.  *** Mitchell also did not vote on all 4 matches but no enforcement of the rule at this time.

Admin: Week Two Summary

Alright Gents, two weeks down, five more to go.

So far, folks are falling into four categories:

  • The Never-posters. --- Gentlemen, remember the faces of your fathers, man up, and fight!
  • The Sometimers --- Consistency, Gents, is a virtue of much value. Be Alwaystimers. It's a better life. Also, I haven't been docking people for not voting, because so many of you don't vote when you don't post. BAD. You're giving power to a very small few.
  • The School of Hard Knocks --- Some posters just don't get the smiles of fate upon their brows. Keep motivated, you down on your luckers. There's still time. Be bold. Fight hard.
  • The Tops of the Kingdom --- Being at the top is nice, but there's plenty of time for the mighty to fall.
A special shout-out to Dan for posting the most encouraging votes in the league. Speaking of which...

VOTE. Vote every Monday or Tuesday.

And now, let Week 3 begin.

ADMIN: REFLECTIONS PAGE ADDED

I'm not sure if you all are interested in chatting about your stories... I guess one of the drawbacks to making this competitive is that that tends to minimize conversation. So, if you want to "talk" about your work or someone else's, you can write on the Reflections page.

If someone has a better idea how to foster communication about story discussion, feel free to put that out there.

ADMIN: New Players, New Spot Open

League,

Two guys are jumping into two of the three spots that opened up this week. Right now, the way I figure it, I'll just give them a record of a tie for week one -- but I'm open to suggestions.

AND there's still ONE SPOT OPEN. If you know anyone who would want to jump onboard, send me their email or sign them up yourselves by adding them under the SETTINGS tab.

Alright, Week Two is On! Standings are posted for week one. Get those stories in.

Here's a slight change to how we do things.

So -- to summarize ---

For This Week:

  • If you didn't posted a story, you'll receive a loss for Week One
Cheers, Mates!

ADMIN: NEW SCHEDULE, NEW PLAYOFFS

Lady and Gentlemen,

Due to some late add-ons, we've expanded our league. This week plays as normal. We are still in the middle of the first week of competition. Please post your story at your earliest convenience (before Sunday).

We've also changed the schedule. Now, with eight players in each division, it makes more sense to just have seven regular season matches (that way, everyone in their division plays each other once). Because of the abridged format, we changed the postseason. Now, everyone will get a chance to compete in the playoffs (but the advantage still goes to the first place finishers, who get a by-week).

Cheers. Get those stories in.

The Tie that Breaks the Camel's Back

Here's how we'll deal with Tie-Breakers: likes.

If a match ends with both players receiving the same amount of votes, then the match will be decided by whichever story gets more likes by the end of the NEXT week. Anyone can like a story -- it doesn't have to be a fellow player of the league. You can get your friends to like it, your enemies, anyone.

If a tie takes place on the last match of the scheduled season, then the players get ONE DAY to accumulate as many likes as possible.

If both teams end up with the same amount of likes by the end of the tie-break period, then both players will receive a LOSS on their record for that week. This is to motivate people to go out and break those ties or suffer the consequence of a LOSS.

Names and Stuff

NAMES
Everyone currently registered is labeled into the Red Division or the White Division (I've been reading up on early Egyptian history, hence the color delineations). If you want to change your name, you can either send me (dante) a message and I'll do it for you, or you can change it manually. Just do as follows. To do it manually:
  • Click on "Design" at the top right corner
  • Click on "Layout" on the left hand side of the menu page
  • Find your division (Red or White) and click on it.
  • Change your name.
  • Save update
NEW RULE
Also, a new sub-rule has been added:
No story may include any visualizations (no pics, drawings, gifs, etc)

PRESEASON IS NOW!
Finally, if anyone wants to post a story between now and January 8th, your welcome to do so. Doing so, you may receive feedback from the group about the state of your story, and then you can revise it and use the story in an actual match game. Just be sure to NOT label the story if you want to post it in preseason.
